1936 Morgan 4 - 4

Only the second four-wheel Morgan imported in late 1936, this car, Chassis 79, was bodied in Australia for the specific purpose of racing to raise the profile of the new and important Morgan 4-4 sports car.

Sponsored by the Melbourne agents, Bry-Law Motors, and driven by Jim Boughton whose mother was an investor in the business, the car first raced at Phillip Island in November 1937.

It contested the SA Grand Prix at Lobethal in January 1938 achieving a fine 2nd place in the 50 mile Handicap. The Boughton Morgan competed at the first-ever Bathurst race meeting, the 1938 Australian Grand Prix, retiring with engine issues.  In 1939, the Morgan, now modified as a streamlined single-seater, was classified 13th at the Australian Grand Prix on the famous Lobethal circuit in the Adelaide Hills.

The car last raced at Lobethal in 1940. Boughton enlisted in the RAAF and was seconded to flying duties in the UK and India. He remained in the motor trade post war and did not race again. The car was laid up and later dismantled in the 1960s before a full and comprehensive restoration saw it returned to the original 1938 stripped roadster format in 2010 by restorer, Tony Heard and Tony Parkinson who purchased the remains of the car in 2007.

It is believed to be the oldest racing 4-4 Morgan in the world and one of just a handful of cars surviving from 1936, the first year of four wheel Morgan manufacture. Don’t miss the opportunity to see this rare Morgan.

Reminiscing with Glenn Shorrock, Melinda Schneider & Mark Vincent

Concours d’Elegance Australia is shaping up to be a star-studded event with a number of celebrated and famous acts set to entertain on the day. Glenn Shorrock, best known for his time spent in the 1970’s pop band, the Little River Band will be singing some of his greatest hits and for those who haven’t seen Glenn perform live, you are in for a real treat on Sunday 10 October.

Inducted into the Australian Recording Industry Association (ARIA) Hall of Fame as a solo artist and for his time spent in the Little River Band, few can forget such classics as “Help is on its way”, “Happy anniversary baby” and “Reminiscing”.

At the Cocktail Party on the evening prior to 10-10-10, Australian Country singer Melinda Schneider and Mark Vincent (winner of 2009’s Australia’s Got Talent) will perform. This intimate gathering will preview a selection of the amazing cars to be showcased on the 10th and with such great entertainment, it’s a night not to be missed.

Frock Up On The Day

Concours d’Elegance Australia is gearing up to be even more fashionable with fashion designer, Charlie Brown showcasing her latest Spring/Summer 2010 collection on the day.

There will also be a “Fashions on the Field” competition so we are encouraging all fashionistas or anyone interested in winning a number of coveted prizes to dress up extra special on the day.

And if walking around dressed up to the nines gets a little tiresome, there’s always the ladies marquee to retreat to where you can enjoy a champagne whilst receiving a manicure, a hair blow dry and a goodies bag full of luxury products.

1918 Henderson 4 Cylinder, 4 Stroke, 1165 cc

This beautiful example of early American motorcycle history is a 1918/9 4 cylinder Henderson motorcycle of 1165cc, will be showcased at Concours d’Elegance Australia.   Henderson motorcycles were built between 1911 and 1931 commencing manufacture in Detroit, Michigan by brothers and partners, William G and Tom W Henderson.

The marque set many endurance and speed records and was the first motorcycle to circumnavigate the globe in 1912.  The Henderson was the favoured patrol bike of US Police Departments, and was often described as the Rolls Royce of motorcycles.

A new record for the Los Angeles to New York City was set in 1917 by Alan Bedell when he covered the 3296 miles in seven days, sixteen and a quarter hours.  One should bear in mind that surfaced roads only went as far as the city outskirts – the balance being an off road experience difficult to master even in today’s four wheel drive vehicles. In late 1917 Ignaz Schwinn, of Schwinn Bicycles who had previously acquired the Excelsior Motor and Manufacturing Company in 1911 bought Henderson motorcycles and moved production to Chicago, Illinois.

Production of Henderson motorcycles continued until 1931 when the Depression brought the end of the marque. The owner of this model Henderson model Z-2 first acquired the motorcycle in South Africa in 1996. In late 1996 the motorcycle was shipped to the USA for a full restoration. Sadly the motorcycle was stolen in transit and finally surfaced again in Holland in 2006.

It is regularly ridden on Club runs and performs perfectly for “an Old Blue Lady” approaching 91 years of age. This is a truly beautiful example of motorcycling history.
