Only the second four-wheel Morgan imported in late 1936, this car, Chassis 79, was bodied in Australia for the specific purpose of racing to raise the profile of the new and important Morgan 4-4 sports car. Sponsored by the Melbourne agents, Bry-Law Motors, and driven by Jim Boughton whose mother was an investor in the business, the car first raced at Phillip Island in November 1937.
It contested the SA Grand Prix at Lobethal in January 1938 achieving a fine 2nd place in the 50 mile Handicap. The Boughton Morgan competed at the first-ever Bathurst race meeting, the 1938 Australian Grand Prix, retiring with engine issues. In 1939, the Morgan, now modified as a streamlined single-seater, was classified 13th at the Australian Grand Prix on the famous Lobethal circuit in the Adelaide Hills.
The car last raced at Lobethal in 1940. Boughton enlisted in the RAAF and was seconded to flying duties in the UK and India. He remained in the motor trade post war and did not race again. The car was laid up and later dismantled in the 1960s before a full and comprehensive restoration saw it returned to the original 1938 stripped roadster format in 2010 by restorer, Tony Heard and Tony Parkinson who purchased the remains of the car in 2007.
It is believed to be the oldest racing 4-4 Morgan in the world and one of just a handful of cars surviving from 1936, the first year of four wheel Morgan manufacture. Don't miss the opportunity to see this rare Morgan.
